Allen Banks and Staward Gorge is the largest area of ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland, set in a dramatic gorge carved by the River Allen. Victorian paths wind through the steep wooded valley past a medieval pele tower ruin at Staward. The site is rich in wildlife, including red squirrels, dippers and otters, and is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic in spring.
