1 April to 30 September Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4.30pm, closed Monday and Tuesday; lunch closure 12.30pm to 1.30pm; last entry 45 minutes before closing; closed 1 October to 31 March. Historic Scotland recommends booking in advance. Notice on 18 October 2026: 'Visitors can explore much of the castle. Inside, some areas are fenced off for safety and there are restrictions in place. While conservation works are ongoing at Balvenie Castle, we've reduced the ticket price.'
The approach crosses very uneven cobbles with drops of up to 30 cm between stones, difficult for wheelchairs, with an alternative route over the lawn; the shop is up two short ramps; the courtyard cobbles are very uneven, the ground-level rooms have uneven surfaces and low light with an impassable ridge along one corridor, and the upper levels are reached by two spiral stairs with handrails. Toilets and an adapted toilet next to the shop (a very heavy door; stewards can help); shop, picnic area, no cafe or audio guide. Dogs on leads outdoors.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas on a lead; HES's general guidance excludes them from visitor centres and roofed areas, so not the shop. The courtyard, lawns and ditch, on a lead, with a ticket, in the April to September season; Highland cattle graze next door.
