Bishop's Waltham Palace was a grand residence of the medieval Bishops of Winchester, begun by Henry of Blois, King Stephen's brother. Its surviving buildings span the 12th and 14th centuries, including a three-storey tower and the tall windows of the great hall associated with William of Wykeham. Spread across grassy grounds, the ruins offer enough standing stonework to suggest the scale of the bishops' household. Information panels help explain the different buildings, and reviewers particularly enjoy combining a wander with a picnic brought from the nearby High Street. A later farmhouse occupies part of the lodging range and houses the separately run local museum. Check its own opening arrangements if you want to go inside. The palace grounds can be uneven and muddy, and the museum's first floor is reached by a wooden staircase.

The entrance is just east of the Station Road junction. Parking is about 30 metres from the palace entrance on loose gravel; contact the custodian about disabled access.
