Historic Scotland names a car park 1.5 miles south-west of Ulbster on the A99 but publishes no charge or free statement, so the status is recorded as unknown. Visitors describe it as small, beside the lochan on Watenan Road.
Driving pin: the car park, about 630 m east-south-east of the cairn as the crow flies; Historic Scotland says the cairn is a further 0.75 miles on foot by a route marked with black and white poles. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
Cairn o' Get is a Neolithic chambered tomb about 5,000 years old on an exposed hilltop near Loch Watenan, south-west of Ulbster in Caithness. It began as a small round cairn with a central chamber up to three metres high, roofed with massive slabs and reached by a short, low passage, and was later enlarged with horn-shaped projections at its corners, making forecourts to north and south. The entrance passes through a small antechamber between two pairs of large upright stones, typical of Caithness tombs, and these and the chamber walls are still clearly visible. The main chamber held burnt bone and charcoal, suggesting cremations, while the antechamber held the unburnt remains of at least seven people with flint arrowheads, pottery and animal bones. Garrywhin fort and stone rows lie close by. Reviewers say to follow the black and white poles for about 15 minutes across rough, often muddy farmland from the small car park, in strong footwear.
Historic Scotland: 'Cairn o’Get is free to visit and open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 20 October 2026.
The marked route crosses farmland and rough ground with some short steep sections and can be wet and muddy, so strong footwear is recommended; allow about 15 minutes each way to the exposed hilltop. The roofless chamber is entered between upright stones. Information boards; no toilets or other facilities.
