Castle Acre Priory preserves an unusually complete picture of monastic life, from the richly decorated west front of its church to the cloister and the monks' domestic buildings. One of the more memorable survivals is a two-storey latrine block with space for 24 users, a practical counterpoint to the carved stonework. The prior's lodging retains a ceiling painted with Tudor roses, and the recreated herb garden grows plants once valued for cooking and medicine. Visitors recommend taking the audio guide, which includes music from a medieval Castle Acre songbook, before wandering among the ruins. Leave time for the exhibition and a picnic on the grass rather than treating the church facade as the whole visit. The ground-level ruins are mostly reached across short grass, but the prior's rooms require a narrow spiral staircase; a virtual tour is available in the exhibition. Dogs on leads are welcome.
