Historic Scotland: access is on foot; park at the Castle Semple Country Park Visitor Centre, 1.5 miles from the church. Renfrewshire Council says parking is free at Castle Semple Country Park, with electric vehicle charging. The visitor centre has a cafe (daily, 9am to 5pm in summer and 10am to 4pm in winter) and the park toilets are open daily 9am to 4pm.
Driving pin: the visitor centre car park off Lochlip Road, Lochwinnoch, 2.1 km south-west of the church in a straight line. The country park is 2 miles west of Howwood on the B787, then the B776; the visitor centre is on National Cycle Route 7.
Castle Semple Collegiate Church stands near Castle Semple Loch in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, outside Lochwinnoch, a roofless church with a west tower and rows of square windows. John, Lord Sempill founded it in 1504 to serve his castle, of which nothing remains, endowing six chaplains, two choirboys and a sacristan whose only purpose was to say Mass for his family and speed their souls through purgatory. Sempill was killed fighting the English at Flodden in 1513, and his son extended the church with an unusual three-sided apse at the east end to hold his tomb. Though its effigy is lost, the tomb remains one of the finest medieval burial monuments in Scotland. The lochs are important for plants and birds, with an RSPB visitor centre at the south end of Castle Semple Loch. Park free at the Castle Semple Visitor Centre in Lochwinnoch, and walk about a mile and a half by woodland path or the flat cycle route.
Historic Scotland: 'Castle Semple Collegiate Church is free to visit and open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 20 October 2026. Visitors can join Historic Scotland's Monument Monitor project by photographing the site.
The church is about 1.5 miles from the visitor centre over generally flat ground: either a scenic woodland path with natural, uneven surfaces or the smoother, flatter off-road National Cycle Route. No facilities at the church; toilets, cafe and bike hire at the visitor centre.
