Open all year. 16 March to 31 October: daily 10am to 6pm, last admission 5pm; 1 November to 15 March: daily 10am to 5pm, last admission 4pm. OPW's page prints no Christmas closure. Charles Fort Cafe is open daily 10am to 5pm serving tea, coffee, toasties, pastries and desserts. Admission is self-guided with a leaflet and map in nine languages; guided tours are free with the ticket, with times available at reception on arrival and fewer out of season. Booking online is optional (up to 60 days ahead, at most 10 tickets); groups of 11 or more book by email. Free admission for everyone on the first Wednesday of each month, first come first served, no online booking that day.
The terrain is sloped, uneven and can be slippery, with high walls and limited edge protection: OPW asks visitors to hold handrails, stay back from edges and keep children under 18 with an adult at all times. Toilets, including an accessible toilet, are in the Old Stable building near the ticket office in the gatehouse; the Barrack Stores exhibition has a ramp to a side door and a guide-operated lift to the first floor, but the two circuits of the fort are grass slopes, steps and gravel. A JAM card is accepted and a sensory box can be borrowed at the ticket office. Card payments accepted; no drones. Desmond Castle in Kinsale is a separate OPW place 2 km away.
