Free for everyone; no tickets or booking. The ferry from Roonagh Pier is charged (adult €17 return with either operator, 2026). The interior is opened by a caretaker in summer; in winter the key is with the caretaker at the island shop.
Arrive on foot, by bike or by public transport.
Clare Island is reached by passenger ferry from Roonagh Pier, about four miles from Louisburgh (signposted); Clare Island Ferry Company and O'Malley Ferries both sail all year, weather permitting, and the crossing takes 10 to 20 minutes. The abbey is about 2.8 km by road from the island pier; bikes can be hired on the island. No official source describes parking at Roonagh Pier. O'Malley Ferries runs a bus from Westport to Roonagh on request the day before.
Pin: the abbey itself, on the island; there is no car park.
On a terrace above the south shore of Clare Island, at the mouth of Clew Bay, this small church known as St Bridget's Abbey, more properly a cell of the Cistercian abbey at Abbeyknockmoy, holds the finest surviving medieval roof paintings in Ireland. Built in phases from the early 13th century, with a two-storey chancel added in the 15th century, it is the burial place of the O'Malleys, lords of the island: a plaque by their canopied tomb carries the motto 'Terra Marique Potens', powerful by land and sea, and Gráinne O'Malley, the pirate queen, is believed to be buried on the island. Under the vault, two O'Malley chiefs had painted dragons, a cockerel, stags, a harper, a cattle raid and horsemen, conserved and partly rediscovered in the 1990s. Reviewers recommend taking the morning ferry from Roonagh Pier, hiring a bike or walking the three kilometres from the harbour, and fetching the key from the island shop to have the paintings to themselves.
An unguided open-air national monument in OPW's care with no staff and no facilities. OPW warns that care and caution should be kept throughout a visit to its unguided sites.
OPW's notice: 'The Abbey is open during the day throughout the summer months in which a caretaker opens the Abbey in the morning and closes it in the evening. During the winter visitors can access the abbey with a key available from the caretaker at the local shop.' The shop is about 100 m from the abbey; its hours are not published.
Clare Island's community site asks visitors not to use flash or touch the walls inside. The church stands in a working graveyard; mural stairs lead to the chancel's upper floor. No toilets.
O'Malley Ferries' October timetable (Monday to Saturday): from Roonagh 08:05, 10:30 and 13:30, returning from the island 07:45, 09:45 and 17:15, weather permitting.
