About
Corrieshalloch Gorge is a mile-long slot canyon 12 miles from Ullapool where the River Droma drops 45 metres over the Falls of Measach, cut by glacial meltwater and now a National Nature Reserve in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. A short steep path from the car park leads to the Victorian suspension bridge of 1874, limited to six people at a time, which sways gently above the falls, and on to a cantilevered viewing platform on the far side with glimpses of Loch Broom; two short woodland trails and a wheelchair-friendly path to a bench complete the walks, and the damp gorge shelters ferns and a nationally rare cranefly. The new Gateway to Nature Centre has toilets, a takeaway cafe and electric car charging. Dogs are welcome on the gorge paths but must be on a lead at all times. Reviewers call the bridge thrilling, single out the roar of the falls after rain, and praise the welcoming staff. Tips from visitors: not one for anyone with vertigo, bring midge repellent for the platform, and the car park fills fast in summer.
