Culloden

Culloden Moor is where the 1745 Jacobite Rising ended on 16 April 1746 in the last pitched battle fought on British soil. Charles Edward Stuart's exhausted army met the Duke of Cumberland's government troops on open moorland and was broken in under an hour, with well over a thousand Jacobites killed. The National Trust for Scotland's visitor centre tells both sides of the story through an accredited museum of weapons and artefacts, a 360-degree immersion theatre that puts you in the middle of the fighting, and a rooftop viewpoint over the field. Outside, flags mark the battle lines, clan grave stones stand beside the 1881 memorial cairn, Leanach Cottage survives from the day of the battle and Highland cattle graze the moor. Reviewers say allow at least two hours and praise the cafe and the skylarks nesting on the field. Tips from visitors: parking fills at peak times, guided tours can be booked ahead, and dogs are welcome on the battlefield but not in the museum.
