Culzean Castle & Country Park is Robert Adam's late 18th-century cliff-top masterpiece on the Ayrshire coast, built for David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis, and now the flagship of the National Trust for Scotland. Inside, the Oval Staircase and the round drawing room looking out to Arran and Ailsa Craig are the set pieces, alongside one of the finest collections of flintlock pistols in Britain; the top-floor flat was given to General Eisenhower after the Second World War. The 260-hectare country park runs from the Swan Pond and the walled garden to caves in the cliffs, a deer park and dozens of follies, with the Adventure Cove and Wild Woodland play areas. Dogs are welcome in the country park and on a lead in the walled garden, though not in the castle or play areas. Reviewers say a full day is not enough and praise the friendly guides, the second-hand bookshop and the beach path at low tide. Tips from regulars: the castle is a ten-minute, mostly flat walk from the visitor centre, with a shuttle buggy for anyone with limited mobility, and there is a small car park at the walled garden.
