The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
Historic Scotland says you can't park at the fort but that there is a public car park and on-street parking nearby; it names neither and publishes no charge or free statement, so the status is recorded as unknown. The Fort Road car park, a surfaced public car park of about 50 spaces on the north side of the fort, is the closest; parking in central Lerwick is time-limited in places, so check the signs.
Driving pin: the Fort Road car park, 173 m north-west of Historic Scotland's own pin. The fort has three entrances and is a short walk from Commercial Street in the centre of Lerwick; Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
Fort Charlotte is an artillery fort in the centre of Lerwick, a short walk from Commercial Street, built to guard Bressay Sound against Dutch and later French warships. A fort begun here in 1665 during the Second Dutch War was never finished, and in 1673 the Dutch landed and burned its abandoned barracks. It was rebuilt in 1781 during the War of American Independence and named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, with a garrison of 270 men, yet it never saw action and not a gun was fired in anger. Its roughly pentagonal ramparts follow the outline of the 1660s fort, with a twelve-gun battery behind a zig-zag parapet facing the sound, now set with replica guns. Later it served as a jail and courthouse, custom house, coastguard station and drill hall. The grounds are open to wander, though the buildings are closed; reviewers suggest 15 to 40 minutes and enjoy the views across the harbour to Bressay. There is no parking at the fort itself.
Later dates are in the calendar.
