Gainsborough Old Hall is a late medieval mansion that survived centuries of changing use, from a fashionable Jacobean residence to a theatre, tenements and a pub. Local volunteers helped rescue and restore it in the mid-20th century, preserving an unusually rich collection of domestic spaces. The great hall, private apartments and medieval kitchen are the main highlights, with a tower climb offering views over the town and River Trent. The cafe occupies the 15th-century parlour, a room later used by the town's Literary Institute and as a Masonic Temple. Dogs on leads are welcome in the cafe and shop areas. Reviewers particularly admire the hall and kitchen, and repeatedly praise the staff's knowledge and welcome. Allow time to explore the rooms as well as the tower. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor; the platform lift serves the basement toilets, while upper rooms require stairs. For a longer visit, use the nearby Riverside car park.
