About
Gainsborough Old Hall is a late medieval mansion that survived centuries of changing use, from a fashionable Jacobean residence to a theatre, tenements and a pub. Local volunteers helped rescue and restore it in the mid-20th century, preserving an unusually rich collection of domestic spaces. The great hall, private apartments and medieval kitchen are the main highlights, with a tower climb offering views over the town and River Trent. The cafe occupies the 15th-century parlour, a room later used by the town's Literary Institute and as a Masonic Temple. Dogs on leads are welcome in the cafe and shop areas. Reviewers particularly admire the hall and kitchen, and repeatedly praise the staff's knowledge and welcome. Allow time to explore the rooms as well as the tower. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor; the platform lift serves the basement toilets, while upper rooms require stairs. For a longer visit, use the nearby Riverside car park.

Open daily 10am-5pm until 24 October 2026; daily 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. From 2 November to 20 December, open Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Check the official calendar for later dates and event exceptions.
Last admission is 45 minutes before closing.
EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card; National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary visits; special events may have separate arrangements.
Accessibility: Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor. Upper rooms require stairs; the only lift serves the basement toilets and takes large wheelchairs but not large scooters. Blue Badge street parking and entrance set-down are available subject to local rules.
Parking: No dedicated on-site parking. Surrounding streets have free parking limited to one hour; EH recommends charged Riverside car park, about 100m away, for longer visits. Its current tariff is not confirmed.
Dogs: Pet dogs on leads are welcome in the cafe and shop; wider hall access is not confirmed.
