Open 10am to 4pm all year, last admission 30 minutes before closing; closed 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Visitor notice (17 October 2026): Cadw's carpenters and masons refurbished the timber footbridge over the castle ditch between February and September 2026, and the castle is open again while the final works to the bridge are completed. Cadw may close monuments at short notice in extreme weather.
Terrain level 2, easy: a five-minute walk on an uneven grassed track to the footbridge, then uneven ground within the castle; the upper levels are reached by designated historic steps with handrails to viewing areas, slippery when wet. Keep behind the guardrails and mind hidden drops. No toilets, cafe, shop or picnic tables. Drones are not permitted.
Dogs: Dogs on short leads are welcome on the ground level of the castle; the steps to the upper viewing areas are for assistance dogs only. The ward inside the moat is at ground level and open to dogs on a short lead; the site is free. The Three Castles Walk follows rights of way across farmland; Monmouthshire Countryside Service asks that dogs follow the line of the path and are kept on a lead through livestock enclosures and near farms.
