House of Dun is William Adam's Georgian house of 1743 above Montrose Basin, built for David Erskine, Lord Dun, whose family had held the estate since 1375, famous for the saloon, where extravagant baroque plasterwork by Joseph Enzer hides Jacobite symbols in plain sight. Costumed guides from the National Trust for Scotland lead tours through rooms of family treasures, from a boot-shaped bath to the embroidery of Lady Augusta Kennedy-Erskine, and the courtyard now houses the Angus Folk Collection of rural life. Outside are formal and walled gardens, woodland walks with red squirrels and a waterfall, and a level track to Montrose Basin nature reserve and its bird hide. Reviewers praise the guides and Erskine's cafe and say it is quieter than better-known houses. Tips from visitors: book a house tour ahead by phone; sat navs send you to the rear gates, so follow the brown signs from Brechin or Montrose; and dogs are welcome on the estate and in the cafe.
