Islandmagee is a peninsula on the East Antrim coast that the Trust calls a microcosm of the Northern Ireland countryside, with cottages, rolling fields and quiet villages. Its Gaelic name means MacAodha's island, after the clan whose home was once at Portmuck, one of three stretches of coast and countryside the Trust owns here. Portmuck harbour has a history of smuggling, fishing and lime production, the site of an ancient monastery and the ruins of a castle gatehouse thought to date from the 11th century, and kittiwakes, guillemots and razorbills gather around the pig-shaped Isle of Muck offshore. Brown's Bay, a horseshoe of sand about 600 metres from end to end, is the Trust's suggested stroll and the starting point for walking to Skernaghan Point. Dogs are welcome on the designated paths, on a short lead near livestock and ground-nesting birds. Reviewers describe beautiful views and a quiet beach that is rarely busy. The Gobbins cliff path to the south is not run by the National Trust.
