Free for everyone; an open-air monument with no staff, tickets or booking. No membership card is needed.
The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
OPW names no car park or directions. A parking area with marked bays is mapped beside the modern St Benin's Church, across the road from the graveyard; it is not named by an official source. No bus service is named.
Driving pin: the graveyard entrance on the L6525, 47 m from OPW's own pin; the church's parking bays are 48 m away across the road.
On the west side of the River Clare, nearly four kilometres north-west of Tuam, Kilbennan marks the monastery founded in the fifth century by St Benen, a disciple of St Patrick; the 17th-century writer John Colgan says Patrick built the first church here inside a fort belonging to Lugni, whom he had baptised. St Jarlath studied here in the sixth century, and the annals record Kilbennan burned in 1114. The round tower, of finely built limestone, still stands sixteen and a half metres at its highest point, with a sandstone doorway four and a half metres off the ground, though its top has fallen. Beside it stand the two gables of a church built by the Franciscans about 1428, the east gable with a blocked twin-light ogee window and a burial vault against it. A holy well lies to the north-west. Reviewers find it a peaceful place, at its best at sunrise or sunset; the graveyard is still in use.
An unguided open-air national monument in OPW's care with no staff and no facilities. OPW warns that care and caution should be kept throughout a visit to its unguided sites.
The round tower cannot be entered (its doorway is 4.5 m up). Uneven paths among graves in a graveyard still in use. The holy well to the north-west is in fields; access to it is not established. No toilets.
