Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace occupies a hillside below the cathedral, where extensive ruins reveal the power and wealth of the medieval bishops. A major conservation project completed in 2023 repaired fragile masonry, removed damaging vegetation and protected wall tops with turf. The surviving halls, vaulted spaces and domestic remains help explain how the palace functioned over five centuries. Its terraced garden and vineyard provide a different perspective, looking out across Lincoln and the surrounding countryside. Visitors praise these views and the amount of detail that can be discovered in the stonework, suggesting allowing time beyond a quick circuit. Access now depends on selected opening dates, so check the official calendar before travelling and distinguish bookable tours from self-led visits. There is no parking on site, and numerous stone steps make the ruins difficult for pushchairs. Dogs are allowed on leads.

From 04/10/2026: On Sunday 4 October, Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace will be open on for a self-led experience with no booking required.
