Linn of Tummel

Linn of Tummel is 19 hectares of woodland cared for by the National Trust for Scotland where the slow River Garry and the fast, crashing River Tummel meet above Loch Faskally, in the heart of Perthshire's Big Tree Country. The linn, Gaelic for a deep pool, is a run of rocky rapids where kayakers and rafts hurtle through in summer and wild swimmers use the pools below, and the woods hold red squirrels, otters, kingfishers and pine martens. A three-mile circular path takes in the Garry Bridge with its view down to Killiecrankie, the Coronation suspension bridge, an Edwardian fish ladder of 1910 built to let salmon climb the falls, and an obelisk marking Queen Victoria's visit in 1844. Reviewers say autumn is the time for the colours and that the trail sign opposite the car park is easy to miss. Tips from visitors: the paths have steps, slopes and narrow stretches beside steep banks, park at Garry Bridge or at Killiecrankie Visitor Centre, and it is free to visit.
