Historic Scotland says parking is available but publishes no charge or free statement, so the status is recorded as unknown; reviewers and the Biosphere's Loch Doon leaflet describe the car park at the castle, which reviewers call free. The road from the car park to the castle carries traffic at the national speed limit, so take care crossing with children and pets.

Loch Doon Castle is an eleven-sided stone curtain wall on the shore of Loch Doon in the hills south of Dalmellington, its unique polygonal plan following the outline of the island it once stood on. The Bruce earls of Carrick built it in the late 1200s; in 1306 the king's brother-in-law Sir Christopher Seton took refuge here before it fell to the English, the last Bruce stronghold in the south-west, and the Scots finally recovered it in 1314. When the hydroelectric scheme raised the loch in 1935 the whole castle was taken down stone by stone from Castle Island, 400 metres out in the water, and rebuilt on the shore. Reviewers find it very quiet, with plaques to read, rock pools and wildlife by the water and views that outshine the ruin; the car park is across the fast lochside road, so mind children and dogs when crossing.
Historic Scotland: 'Loch Doon Castle is free to visit and open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 20 October 2026. Visitors can join Historic Scotland's Monument Monitor project by photographing the site.
Grass around the walls with information plaques; the interior holds the foundations of the Kennedys' tower house. No toilets or other facilities.
