Free for everyone; an open-air monument with no staff, tickets or booking. No membership card is needed.
The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
OPW names no car park, but a small parking area is mapped at the site entrance, from which paths lead to the homestead, and Google reports accessible parking; no tariff or free statement is published. Woodfield is a short detour off the N71, easy from Clonakilty or Rosscarbery. OPW gives no directions or bus service.
Driving pin: the parking area at the entrance, 68 m from OPW's own pin on the homestead.
Michael Collins, the Big Fella, was born on 16 October 1890 at the family farm of Woodfield at Sam's Cross, a short detour off the N71 between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery in west Cork. The single-storey stone cottage in which he was born stands at the rear of the site; around 1900 the family moved into a new farmhouse near the entrance and the old dwelling became a farm outbuilding. In April 1921, during the War of Independence, the Essex Regiment burned the farmhouse, and its footprint is laid out on the lawn beside the path to the surviving cottage. Collins was killed at Béal na Bláth on 22 August 1922. The farm was sold in 1923, bought by the State, opened to the public in 1990 and made a national monument in 1991. Today it is a quiet, tree-lined parkland with gravel paths, a bust of Collins and panels of photographs of the original homestead. It is free, unstaffed and open-air, with a small parking area at the entrance.
An unguided open-air national monument in OPW's care with no published hours, no staff and no facilities. OPW warns that care and caution should be kept throughout a visit to its unguided sites.
Gravel paths and lawns through tree-lined parkland; Google reports a wheelchair-accessible entrance. The Michael Collins House museum on Emmet Square in Clonakilty and the Michael Collins Centre at Castleview are separate, non-OPW attractions.
