Moirlanich Longhouse

Moirlanich Longhouse is a cruck-framed byre dwelling in Glen Lochay, half a mile west of Killin, where the Robertson family lived under one roof with their cattle until 1968, and it survives almost untouched. A wooden partition divides the living quarters from the byre that held three milking cows, and inside are the hingin' lum, a canopied chimney over the open hearth, two box beds, a Scotch dresser and layers of early 20th-century wallpaper, with the family's clothes and farm tools on display. The National Trust for Scotland opens it on two afternoons a week in summer, with volunteers to tell the story and information boards outside for anyone who arrives when it is shut. Reviewers say the guides bring it alive and that it is a rare glimpse of a simpler, harder life. Tips from visitors: check the opening days first, there is a small car park and picnic table, the floors are uneven and the light is low, and Killin has cafes.
