The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
Historic Scotland says only that the church is at the end of the A859 in the south of Harris and names no parking. Reviewers park in the lay-by right in front, which they describe as free with a few spaces that can fill; no official statement exists, so the status is recorded as unknown. Community-run public toilets, free with a donation asked, are about 60 m up the road.
Driving pin: the lay-by in front of the church on the A859, 47 m from Historic Scotland's own pin. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only; Harris is reached by CalMac ferry.
St Clement's Church, Tur Chliamainn in Gaelic, stands a stone's throw from the sea at Rodel at the southern tip of Harris, the grandest medieval building in the Western Isles. Alasdair Crotach MacLeod, 8th chief of Dunvegan and Harris, built it in the early 1500s as the burial place of his clan, and his own tomb of 1528 on the south side of the choir is the finest of its kind in Scotland: an arched recess carved with God and the crucified Christ, a castle, a galley under sail and a hunting scene, with his armoured effigy guarded by lions. The cross-shaped plan with its west tower was unique in the Western Highlands. Restored in the 1700s and 1800s, it is now cared for and opened daily by Historic Scotland, with services only by arrangement. Reviewers praise the carvings and the information boards, park in the lay-by in front and use the community toilets just up the road.
Later dates are in the calendar.
