Wharram Percy Deserted Medieval Village

Wharram Percy preserves the shape of a medieval village in a remote valley in the Yorkshire Wolds. Occupied for about six centuries before its abandonment soon after 1500, it became a pioneering archaeological site where decades of excavation transformed understanding of rural medieval life. The ruined church and millpond are the most obvious features, while the outlines of lost houses spread across the grassy plateau above them. Information panels help visitors read what can otherwise look like an empty landscape. Reviewers find the church particularly memorable and recommend allowing time for the walk from the car park, which is about three quarters of a mile over uneven ground. The site is also reached by the Wolds Way footpath. Wear sturdy waterproof footwear, expect steep or muddy stretches, and stay on the paths because surrounding land is private. Dogs must remain on leads around grazing livestock.
