The Battle of Bannockburn

Bannockburn, two miles south of Stirling, is where Robert the Bruce's army defeated Edward II of England on 23 and 24 June 1314, the victory that secured Scottish independence, and the National Trust for Scotland's visitor centre puts you in the middle of it with a digitally re-created battle in which you take a side and fight it out with the help of expert guides. Outside, a walk through the memorial park leads to the rotunda and flagpole on the spot where Bruce is said to have raised his standard, and to Pilkington Jackson's bronze equestrian statue of the king looking towards Stirling Castle. Reviewers say the battle experience is a must and praise the guides for separating evidence from legend, and rate the cafe and shop. Tips from visitors: the experience is by guided tour only and tour times depend on staffing, so phone the centre after 9.30 on the day; the park and statue are free to walk with dogs; and parking is free.
