Chirk Castle was begun around 1295 for Edward I to subdue the last princes of Wales, and it is the last castle of that campaign still lived in, bought in 1595 by sugar trader and privateer Sir Thomas Myddelton, whose family held it for over 400 years. Inside are a 17th-century Long Gallery, three 18th-century State Rooms full of tapestries, a servants' hall, and a Chapel Music Room evoking the 1920s. The 5.5-acre garden of clipped yews and herbaceous borders ends at a terrace looking across the Cheshire and Shropshire plains, and 480 acres of parkland hold veteran trees, wildflower meadows and a stretch of Offa's Dyke; dogs on short leads may use the formal garden but not the kitchen garden or play area. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable room guides. Tips from visitors: there is no step-free access inside the castle, the walk up from the Home Farm car park is a steep 200 yards with a volunteer-run shuttle bus, and the castle closes when high winds are forecast.

Access to the estate is free, but admission is required to access the castle, tearoom and gardens. Under 5s are free. Group visits should be booked in advance. There is no charge for car parking.
Last entry to the castle staterooms is 3.30pm, with the last entry ticket sold at 3pm. Please note we do not have an EV charger available. We apologise for any inconvenience. The Courtyard shop and The Dairy are open seasonally. We close when high winds are forecast, please check for any emergency notices before travelling.

Tip: The dungeons are worth seeing! It’s one way and quite steep so might be a difficult to walk down!

2.5 miles (4km), easy, 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, mostly flat gravel paths with uneven terrain, some slopes and gates. Circular route through woodland, parkland and fields, following blue markers from Stable Bank. Starts from Chirk Castle car park, Wrexham LL14 5AF; permissive footpaths from Chirk and the Offa's Dyke Path are open all year, and the entrance and exit drives run 1.5 miles to the main car park during the season.

1.2 miles (1.92km), moderate, 30 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, mostly through fields that may hold livestock. Start point is Chirk Castle car park, grid reference SJ267384, leaving by the gate at the rear left of the main car park and following red marker arrows up to the hill behind the castle.

3 miles (4.8km), moderate, 2 to 3 hours, easy but steep terrain mixing woodland paths and country tracks. Starts from Chirk Castle car park, postcode LL14 5AF, and follows orange markers past sections of Offa's Dyke and the site of the 1165 battle of Crogen. The Trust's dog page describes this route as leaving the estate on a permissive path open April to September.
