Old Oswestry Hillfort was probably the principal settlement and stronghold of an Iron Age community. Its 40 acres were protected by multiple ramparts, which remain the main feature of a visit today. Climbing through the banks and ditches gives a sense of the effort needed to create the defences, while the open upper ground offers views over the surrounding countryside. Reviewers particularly enjoy the scale of the earthworks and the information boards that help explain a site best understood by moving around it. The official paths include steep and uneven sections, so choose sturdy shoes and take the climbs at your own pace. Use the free parking off Gatacre Avenue, then follow the public footpath for roughly a quarter of a mile to the hillfort.
