Historic Scotland: there is no car park at Claypotts Castle, but there is some on-street parking nearby; please be considerate to local residents. The castle stands in a housing estate off the A92 at Claypotts Junction, east of Dundee city centre.
Driving pin: the castle itself (Historic Scotland's pin). Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
Claypotts Castle stands on a lawn among the houses of Broughty Ferry, off the A92 on the edge of Dundee, and Historic Scotland calls it perhaps the quirkiest castle in Scotland. It was built for John Strachan, whose family had farmed Claypotts as tenants of Lindores Abbey until the Reformation raised their fortunes; the dates 1569 and 1588 are carved on its crow-stepped gables. It is a small Z-plan tower house, a central block with round towers at opposite corners, each topped by a square attic room on corbelling unique for its type. Barely altered after nearly 500 years of occupation, it keeps its original late-medieval timber roof. Twelve gun holes ring the ground floor, more for show than for war. It was later sold to William Graham of Claverhouse, ancestor of Bonnie Dundee, who never slept there. The exterior can be seen at any time, and the interior opens free on a few summer days with volunteer guides. Park considerately on nearby streets.
Historic Scotland: 'The exterior can be viewed year-round.' The interior was open free of charge on Sunday 28 June, Friday 24 July, Friday 21 August and Sunday 27 September 2026, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm), closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1.30pm, no booking required. No dates for 2027 were published on 20 October 2026.
The castle stands on a railed lawn in a residential street and is seen from outside at any time. No toilets or other facilities; volunteers guide visitors on the open days.
