The De Grey Mausoleum at Flitton holds a sequence of 17 funerary monuments to the family of nearby Wrest Park, spanning the early seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Added to the parish church of St John the Baptist, the burial chapel grew into a cruciform building as the family's status and commemorative ambitions increased. Sculpted figures, inscriptions and elaborate tombs make this a close encounter with changing tastes in remembrance, including work by the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack. Entry is through the church nave on selected volunteer opening days. Several reviewers describe arriving to find it closed, so confirm an advertised date before making a special journey. English Heritage recommends downloading the audio tour beforehand because mobile reception inside can be unreliable. Parking is limited to surrounding streets, and there are no visitor facilities at the church. Allow time to study individual monuments rather than treating it as a quick exterior stop.
