Dollar Glen

Dollar Glen is a wooded gorge cut into the Ochil Hills above the town of Dollar, where the Burns of Care and Sorrow tumble through waterfalls below Castle Campbell, the 15th-century Clan Campbell stronghold run by Historic Environment Scotland. The National Trust for Scotland cares for the glen itself, a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its ferns, 190 kinds of lichen and more than 100 mosses, with brown long-eared bats and green woodpeckers. A network of paths with bridges and steps climbs from the Quarry car park through the gorge to the castle gates and the open hill, a circuit of an hour or two. Reviewers love the waterfalls in every season and say children paddle in the burn. Tips from visitors: the paths are steep, uneven and slippery in the wet, there are no toilets, park at the lower car park for the full walk or the small upper one for a short route to the castle, and members park free.
