OPW names no car park: the garden is in the city centre and the page gives bus, bicycle and walking directions only. Commercial car parks within about 400 m include the Ilac Centre car park on Parnell Street and the Q-Park and Park Rite car parks off Parnell Street; their tariffs are not stored. A Dublin Bus stop named for the garden stands on Parnell Square East, and O'Connell Street is at the end of the square.
Driving pin: the Parnell Square East gate, the step-free entrance on the street OPW gives as the address; OPW's own pin is inside the garden.
The Garden of Remembrance is a sunken memorial garden on Parnell Square in the centre of Dublin, designed by the architect Dáithí Hanly and dedicated to the memory of all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom. It opened on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. A cross-shaped reflecting pool runs the length of the garden to the steps at its far end, where Oisín Kelly's sculpture of the Children of Lir, the four children of legend transformed into swans for nine hundred years before becoming human again, rises against a curved wall inscribed with a poem by Liam Mac Uistin that ends 'O generations of freedom remember us, the generations of the vision'. Flower beds, benches and plaques line the paths, and the garden is intended as a place of quiet remembrance and respite from the clamour of the city. Entry is free, there are steps at the main gate and a lift for step-free access, and an hour is enough.
Free entry
Open all year: April to September 08:30 to 18:00, October to March 09:30 to 16:00; OPW prints no closed dates. The gates are locked outside those hours and a reviewer notes they are not always unlocked on the minute. Allow about an hour. No toilets, cafe or shop.
The garden is sunken: steps lead down from the main gate on Parnell Square East and a lift at the far end of the street frontage gives step-free access. Wear appropriate footwear (OPW). Assistance dogs only.
