Garrison Walls

The Garrison Walls on St Mary's trace more than 350 years of coastal defence around the headland west of Hugh Town. Gates, batteries and stretches of stone wall show how the island's defences developed, with sea views accompanying much of the circuit. The Powder House, opposite the main gate, contains an exhibition explaining the Garrison's history and makes a useful starting point before heading further around the headland. Reviewers appreciate the signposted features and the combination of military history with coastal scenery, often singling out the smaller details as well as the walls themselves. Allow around two hours for the full circuit and wear footwear suited to uneven sections. The approach from Hugh Town climbs steep, winding streets, so the official advice is to arrive on foot or by bicycle. Shops, food outlets and toilets are in town.
