The Great Orme is a headland of carboniferous limestone above Llandudno, formed around 350 million years ago, and on its summit National Trust Cymru cares for Y Parc, a farm enclosed by a drystone wall some 3,000 metres long. A tenant farms it with nature in mind, grazing the heath beyond the wall, and a wildflower meadow is taking shape beside the permissive footpath. The limestone grassland and heath support choughs and the endemic wild cotoneaster, and hundreds of archaeological sites, from round houses to field boundaries, show people here since the Stone Age. Reviewers praise the sweeping views over the sea and coast, and point out that you can walk up from Llandudno, ride the tram or drive to the summit car park. Worth knowing: the cafe, toilets and shop at the Summit Complex are not run by the Trust and close in winter, and the farm paths can close during lambing. Dogs are welcome on a lead, with care around livestock.
The coastline is open all day on NT's calendar.
Y Parc is a working farm: the permissive paths may be closed temporarily for works or during lambing. The land includes steep and uneven sections.
The Summit Complex cafe, bar, shop, toilets (including accessible toilets), playground, mini golf and visitor centre are not National Trust and close in winter.
Bus 26 from Llandudno stops at the Summit Complex; a tram also runs from the base of the Great Orme to the summit. Llandudno station is 1.5 miles away.
Free for everyone. Parking at the Summit Complex and St Tudno Road is pay and display and not run by the National Trust; the tram and Summit Complex are separate businesses.
The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
There is no National Trust car park. NT lists pay and display car parking at the Summit Complex and at St Tudno Road, both not National Trust; the NT page gives no tariff and no member concession. The road up from Llandudno is very steep and narrow: follow signs for the ancient mine, then continue to the summit car park.
Driving pin: Google's 'Great Orme Summit Pay & Display Car Park' at the Summit Complex, the car park NT's road directions lead to, about 25 m from NT's own coordinate for the place.
