The Green seafront car park (Beaumaris Town Council), two minutes' walk, £8 all day; county council car park behind the castle. Not a Trust car park, so membership does not cover it.
The castle has no car park of its own; Cadw names two charging car parks about 200 m away, both with accessible spaces and a flat, even walk to the entrance. The main town car park is The Green on the seafront at Victoria Terrace, run by Beaumaris Town Council, two minutes' walk: a flat rate of £8 all day for cars (£5.50 overnight 6pm to 6am, £20 for campervans and vans, £50 weekly pass), paid by card to an attendant or by app, so take a card or a parking app. Isle of Anglesey County Council's Castle Car and Coach Park behind the castle (LL58 8AL, five minutes' walk) takes coaches; its band on the county tariff is not confirmed. Two accessible roadside bays adjoin the monument. Mind two-way traffic crossing from the car park.
Driving pin: the Beaumaris Green Car Park listing, 195 m south of Cadw's own map marker on the castle; the entrance is a short walk past the wet moat and over a wooden bridge. By road: A545 from Menai Bridge or the A5 from Bangor. National Cycle Network route 5 passes 5 km away.
By rail: Bangor, 15 km, on the Crewe to Bangor and Holyhead line. By bus: routes 53, 57 and 58, Bangor to Beaumaris, Llanddona and Penmon, 100 m.
Beaumaris Castle, Castell Biwmares, is famous as the greatest castle never built: the last of Edward I's royal strongholds in Wales and perhaps his masterpiece, begun with James of St George in 1295 on the beautiful marsh beside the Menai Strait, and a World Heritage Site with Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech since 1986. Four concentric rings of defences include a water-filled moat with its own dock, and the outer walls alone bristle with 300 arrow loops, yet money ran out and work petered out by the 1320s, leaving the south gatehouse and the six great inner towers short of their intended height. Reviewers love the symmetry and the wide moat, walk the battlements and the passages in the inner walls, and find the chapel with its carved stone ceiling and stained glass. Tips: walk round the moat outside in single file, bring a card or app for the car park, and expect no toilets on site. Dogs on short leads may explore the ground level.
Open daily all year: 1 March to 30 June 9.30am to 5pm; 1 July to 31 August 9.30am to 6pm; 1 September to 31 October 9.30am to 5pm; 1 November to 28 February 10am to 4pm. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Closed 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Cadw may close monuments at short notice in extreme weather.
Terrain level 2, easy: the visitor centre has automatic doors, a low desk and a short steep resin ramp on the exit, then a gravel path and a wide wooden bridge over the moat to the grassed outer ward; much of the castle can be seen from ground level, with gravel between the wards, while the corridors in the walls are up short narrow stairs of 10 to 15 steps and the wall walks need many more, with uneven floors, narrow doorways and handrails. The path round the moat is narrow and unfenced, so walk in single file; seasonal nesting birds roost on the wall walks. No toilets on site: free public toilets with accessible and baby-changing facilities are 50 m away on a flat walk. Portable induction loop, dog bowl, picnic tables (do not feed bread to the birds), exhibition, gift shop with guidebooks, free Wi-Fi; no cafe or audio guide. Drones are not permitted.
Dogs: Dogs on short leads are welcome all year on the ground-floor levels; the upper levels and wall walks are for assistance dogs only. The grassed outer and inner wards, the whole ground level inside the walls, are open to dogs on short leads with an admission ticket; a dog bowl is provided and the shop sells dog treats.
