About

Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall, was built in the 1590s for Bess of Hardwick, the Countess of Shrewsbury who became one of the richest women in Elizabethan England; her initials ES still crown the parapets. A processional staircase climbs to second-floor state rooms hung with 400-year-old tapestries and embroideries, ending in the kitchen with its copper pans. Ground floor rooms tell Bess's story, the herb garden, orchards and lakeside parkland fill the rest of a day, and Harry Potter fans will know the exterior as Malfoy Manor. Dogs on leads are welcome in the parkland, Stableyard and formal gardens, though not in the hall. Reviewers praise the volunteers, the Great Barn restaurant and the snack van, and note the ruined Old Hall next door is included with entry, though access is sometimes limited to its courtyard. Tips from regulars: allow two hours for the house, take the covered buggy if the walk from the car park is too far, and keep to the flatter routes beside the exit roads if steep banks are a problem.

National Trust members visit and park for free. When you buy a non-member admission ticket you're directly supporting our conservation work. There are two different tickets to Hardwick, the House and Garden ticket gives access to all areas, whereas the Parkland and Stableyard ticket permits access to the 2,500 acre estate and the facilities in the Stableyard. All tickets include car parking and no advance booking required. English Heritage members will gain free entry to both the Old Hall and Hardwick Hall as part of the National Trust and English Heritage partnership on this property.

Start point is the Hardwick Garden Gates, grid reference SK462635, reached from the National Trust car park at Doe Lea, Chesterfield S44 5QJ; the car park has 600 spaces and is free, but the Trust expects all visitors to buy a Stableyard ticket from visitor reception. Steps and uneven terrain in places. Toilets, shop and the Great Barn restaurant are in the Stableyard.
