About

Nine Ladies Stone Circle is a small early Bronze Age ring on Stanton Moor, where more than 70 cairns and barrows show how busy this upland was some 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. Despite the name there are ten stones, the tenth fallen and found in 1977, set on a low bank about 11.5 metres across. Folk tradition says nine women were turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath to a fiddler, now the King Stone nearby, whose graffiti is mentioned in Dickens's The Pickwick Papers. Managed by the Peak District National Park Authority, the circle is reached only on foot, by field and woodland paths with gates, stiles and uneven ground. Reviewers enjoy combining it with a wander across the moor to the Cork Stone and the tower. Dogs on leads are welcome but must be kept under close control near grazing animals. One tip from regulars: the lanes are too narrow to park on, so use the formal car park outside Birchover.
