Horsey Windpump

Horsey Windpump is a five-storey listed drainage mill built in 1912 on the site of earlier mills, where the Norfolk Broads meet the coast. Struck by lightning in 1943, it stood silent for over 75 years until the Trust restored it with a new winding cap and sails that turn on selected days. Climb the 61 steep steps for views across Horsey Mere and the flat marshes the pumps once drained; the ground floor is step-free and shows a film of the upper levels. Outside there is a thatched cafe with scones baked on site, a second-hand bookshop, an orchard and a wildlife garden where swallowtail butterflies appear in summer. Waymarked walks cross the marshes and dunes to Horsey beach and its grey seal colony. Dogs are welcome on leads but not inside the mill. Tips from visitors: the car park is small and pay and display for non-members, and only five people are allowed on the top balcony at once, so expect a short wait.
