Ightham Mote

Ightham Mote, near Sevenoaks, is a moated manor house begun around 1320 and lived in for more than 650 years, reckoned the most complete medieval moated manor in England. Its last private owner, the American businessman Charles Henry Robinson, left it to the National Trust in 1985. Inside, the Great Hall, crypt and Jacobean staircase lead to the New Chapel, whose painted Tudor ceiling reviewers name as a highlight, and the courtyard holds a Grade I listed kennel built for a St Bernard called Dido. Outside there are flat walks around the lakes, a cutting garden full of sunflowers in late summer, a natural play area and a circular walk across the estate to Old Soar Manor. Reviewers praise the knowledgeable room volunteers, the daily introductory talks and the cafe beside the car park. Tips from visitors: the short path down from the entrance is steep, so pushchair and wheelchair users should take the longer, gentler route or the shuttle, and dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden.
