Historic Scotland names no parking: the site is about a quarter of a mile west of Holland Farm on Papa Westray. A farm track leaves the island road at Holland and runs west through gates to the shore, where a short path leads to the two houses; reviewers describe a walk across a field at the farm.
Papa Westray is reached by Orkney Ferries, either on the North Isles car ferry from Kirkwall on the days it calls (from 1 April 2026: adult £6.75 single, car £16.00 single) or on the passenger-only ferry from Pierowall on Westray (inter-island adult £3.40 single), whose winter sailings from 28 September 2026 are partly on request and must be booked at least an hour ahead; Loganair also flies from Kirkwall and makes the 90-second hop from Westray. Reviewers describe a long walk from the ferry. Driving pin: the start of the track at Holland, 646 m east of Historic Scotland's own pin.
On the west shore of Papa Westray stand the oldest standing stone buildings in north-west Europe: two oblong Neolithic houses side by side, lived in more than 5,000 years ago and linked by a low passage. Their walls stand just over 1.6 metres high with their original doorways, and inside are stone cupboards and stalls. The larger and probably older house has two rooms, a hearth, a stone cupboard and post-holes for a low roof, probably thatched or turfed; the smaller has three rooms with cupboards and may have been a workshop or store. Finds include traces of barley, wheat and farm animals and a macehead of antler and whalebone. The people who lived here may have been buried in the chambered cairn on the Holm of Papa Westray, and the houses are part of a larger settlement not yet explored. Reviewers find it quiet and well worth the long walk from the ferry; the last stretch is a farm track and field path from Holland.
Historic Scotland: 'Knap of Howar is free to visit and open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 20 October 2026.
The two houses stand on open grass above the shore and can be entered through their low original doorways and the linking passage; the walk from the road crosses farmland with gates. No toilets or facilities at the site.
