Leith Hill

Leith Hill is the highest point in south-east England, and the 18th-century Gothic tower built on its summit by Richard Hull lifts visitors above 1,000 feet for views across the Weald to the South Downs and the London skyline. The 78 spiral steps pass a second-hand bookshop, and a kiosk at the base sells drinks. Below the summit, Rhododendron Wood was planted by Caroline Wedgwood with Himalayan and Chinese species, and Leith Hill Place, childhood home of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, is now free to enter, its Kitchen serving cream teas. Reviewers praise the waymarked trails, spring bluebells and walks that suit children and dogs. Tips from regulars: Windy Gap car park is closest to the tower but the path up is steep steps, while Starveall Corner is the gentle route; there is no phone signal, so set up the JustPark app beforehand; the only toilets are at Leith Hill Place.
