About

Polesden Lacey was the country retreat of Margaret Greville, the brewery heiress and Edwardian hostess who remodelled the house in 1906, entertained Edward VII here and lent it to the future George VI and Queen Elizabeth for their honeymoon in 1923, before leaving it to the National Trust in 1942. Her gilded saloon, lined with panelling from an Italian palazzo, is the room reviewers remember, along with the servants' hall and attic bedrooms now opened upstairs. Outside, the walled rose garden and lavender beds sit above lawns with wide views across the valley, and the Long Walk leads through the 1,600-acre estate to the Squirrels play area. Dogs are welcome across large parts of the garden and estate. Regulars single out the dog cemetery, the seats beside the house facing the view, and a good cafe with plants for sale by the shop. Tips from visitors: pick up the free map at reception, and aim for late April or May for blossom and fresh greenery.

There is no need to book your visit to Polesden Lacey. Please note that all members must bring their physical National Trust membership card for entry. This should be your individually named card. At this time, we do not accept third-party apps or pictures of your card. Temporary membership cards sent directly from the National Trust can be accepted on the phone, however they do not scan on our car park machines currently, so please speak to a member of our team in visitor reception to validate your parking. Child Tickets: Please note that child tickets are for those aged between 5 and 17 years. Under 5s can visit for free. Parking: Members park for free. Please scan your membership card on the car park machine. Non-members: £5 all day charge. Please pay by cash at the machine, or via card at Visitor Reception. Just the ground floor of the house will be open during 2026; there is no exhibition taking place this year so the first floor will remain closed to visitors. Please note that hot food is served in the café between 12pm and 3pm.
