Historic Scotland, 20 October 2026: 'The castle is currently closed and can be viewed through protective fencing while we carry out vital conservation work.' No reopening date and no opening hours; the castle's plan-your-visit page has been withdrawn. Reviewers since 2025 describe the ruin as fenced off while its higher walls are checked, but visible from the paths around it.
The castle stands on a wooded promontory at the south end of Castle Loch, owned by a community trust, with a 3-mile path round the loch, a bird hide, benches and a sculpture trail of wood carvings leading to the castle. Paths can be boggy after rain. No toilets or other facilities at the castle.
Dogs: The landowner of the loch paths asks for dogs on a lead or at heel and for owners to pick up after them.
