The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
Historic Scotland names no parking: the cross is in Ruthwell Parish Church, 8.5 miles south-east of Dumfries off the B724. Reviewers describe plenty of parking in a car park by the manse, where the church key box is kept, but no official source names it, so the status is recorded as unknown.
Driving pin: the church, 12 m from Historic Scotland's own pin. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
Inside the whitewashed parish church of Ruthwell, near the Solway coast south-east of Dumfries, stands a 5.2-metre cross carved in the early 700s, when this was part of Northumbria, and described as the most important sculptural survival of Anglo-Saxon Britain. Two faces show Gospel scenes with Latin inscriptions, among them the Crucifixion, the Annunciation, Christ healing the blind man and the flight into Egypt. The other two carry vine scrolls with animals eating grapes, framed by runes deciphered in 1840 as part of the Old English poem The Dream of the Rood, in which the cross itself tells of the Crucifixion. About 1642 the church ordered it destroyed as idolatrous; the minister broke it up with evident care, and the pieces were reused as seats or buried. Rev Henry Duncan reassembled it in the early 1800s with a new head by a local mason, and since 1887 it has stood in an apse built for it. If the church is locked, the key is in a labelled box outside.
Historic Scotland: 'Ruthwell Cross is free to visit and is situated in Ruthwell Parish Church. If church is locked, the key is located in a labelled box outside the church.' No visiting hours are published by Historic Scotland or the parish; reviewers in 2025 found the key in a lock box in the car park.
Ruthwell Church is a working Church of Scotland church of St Andrew's and St Bryde's Parish, with a service at 10am on the second and third Sundays of the month. The cross stands in an apse at the east end; postcards and a guidebook are on sale inside. No toilets.
