Parking details

The museum has a small car park of its own which is free to use (MNH Manx Museum Access Guide 2024 and the MNH FAQ, read 17 October 2026), with three disabled bays opposite the entrance and a dropped kerb; it has a single entrance and exit with a small turning area at the bottom, and when full it may be used for drop-off and collection. An outdoor picnic area with benches and sea views sits at the rear of the car park.

Alternative: Chester Street Car Park, the Isle of Man Government multi-storey on Market Street (entrances from Market Street at ground level and Finch Road at level 5, 1.8 m height limit). Take the lift to level 8 and cross the footbridge to the museum; the route is step-free but there is a steep incline from the footbridge through the museum car park. Pay and display Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm: £2.20 up to 1 hour, £2.90 up to 2 hours, £4.00 up to 3 hours, rising to £6.80 for 10 hours; Saturday £2.70 all day, Sunday £2.00 all day, bank holidays free; cash and card; Blue Badge holders in a disabled bay get one extra hour (gov.im car parks page, read 17 October 2026).

Surrounding streets are mostly in Douglas's two-hour disc zone (Monday to Friday; not operated at weekends); discs are free from Post Offices, the Sea Terminal Welcome Centre or the museum reception. Coach bays on Finch Road at the bottom of Crellin's Hill, free.

Driving pin: the official MNH page pin (54.154569, -4.48195), which reverse-geocodes to 1 Kingswood Grove and sits at the museum entrance where the disabled bays are; the museum car park opens off Kingswood Grove beside it. The alternative on-foot approaches are Crellin's Hill (steep) and the Garden Entrance at the bottom of Crellin's Hill.

Transport: buses 3, 3A, 22, 22H, 25 and 25H; horse tram Broadway stop; Manx Electric Railway and Steam Railway Douglas stations. Douglas bus station is a 10 to 15 minute walk via Strand Street and the Chester Street lift.

About

The Manx Museum, Thie Tashtee Vannin, is the Isle of Man's national museum, art gallery, library and archive, cared for by Manx National Heritage on Kingswood Grove above Douglas. An introductory film covers 10,000 years of Island history, and the galleries run from the stone age to the modern era: the Viking Gallery holds hoards of silver and gold from an island with more Viking silver per square kilometre than England, Wales, Scotland or Ireland, and other rooms tell the story of Tynwald, wartime internment, the TT races and the Victorian holiday trade. The National Art Gallery shows Archibald Knox, William Hoggatt and John Miller Nicholson, and the Natural History Gallery covers Manx wildlife. Reviewers rate the film and the TT gallery, find the museum larger than it looks and say there is plenty for children. Tips from visitors: the walk up from the seafront is short but steep, so use the lift to level 8 of Chester Street car park and the footbridge, and allow several hours.
