Driving pin: HES's own pin at the museum on Dundee Road, close to Meigle Church; the entrance is 10 m from the road. Historic Scotland names no bus service, only its journey planners.
Meigle Sculptured Stone Museum holds 26 carved Pictish stones from the late 700s to the late 900s, all that survives of the Picts' power centre at Meigle and one of the most important collections of early medieval sculpture in Western Europe. The royal estate of Migdele is recorded in the time of King Ferat, shortly before Kenneth Mac Alpin became king of the Picts and Scots, and many stones may mark the graves of its warrior elite, shown with weapons or hunting. Meigle 1, the oldest, is an 8th-century cross-slab carved with Pictish symbols, horsemen and animals. Meigle 2, two and a half metres tall, shows Daniel in the lions' den among hunting scenes, and local legend says it marked the grave of Vanora, Queen Guinevere. There are recumbent gravestones, a hogback stone and rare fragments of the lost Pictish church. The stones fill a former schoolhouse beside the graveyard where most were found, and reviewers praise the staff who explain them.
1 April to 30 September Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am to 4.30pm, closed Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends; closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1pm; last entry 30 minutes before closing; closed 1 October to 31 March. 1 April 2027 is a Thursday, so the first open day is Friday 2 April. Historic Scotland recommends booking an entry slot in advance to guarantee entry. No notice on 18 October 2026.
The museum is 10 m from the road along a fine gravel path, with 5 concrete steps and a handrail to the entrance; alternatively continue up a steep pavement and through the graveyard to a timber ramp. Inside it is level, with a raised threshold and narrow spaces between displays, and chairs to sit and look. Toilets and a small shop; the nearest adapted toilet is 6.5 miles away at Tesco, Welton Road, Blairgowrie. No cafe or audio guide. No dogs except assistance dogs.
