About

Milton Chantry is the oldest building in Gravesend, all that remains of a leper hospital founded in 1322 by Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. It has served as a hospital, a Tudor chantry chapel, a public house and a Georgian barracks, and during the Second World War its basement was converted into a gas decontamination chamber. Although it is mostly encased in 19th-century brick, the building keeps its 14th-century timber roof, and it now stands in the gardens of New Tavern Fort. Inside, a collection on the heritage of Gravesend includes Roman finds, and a free audio guide leads visitors through the building's many uses. Reviewers enjoy the local history on show. The chantry is run by Gravesham Borough Council for English Heritage and opens seasonally, so check before setting out. The floors are linked by wooden stairs, and the nearest parking is the pay and display car park in Milton Place. Only assistance dogs are allowed.
