About
Tilbury Fort defended the Thames approach to London, with the great bastioned fortress commissioned by Charles II after the Dutch raid of 1667. Its surviving moats, outworks and gun positions show how an artillery fort controlled both land and river approaches. The site's history extends from Jacobite prisoners to guns that helped bring down a Zeppelin in 1916, and the Defending the River exhibition explains that long defensive role. Explore the Victorian magazine tunnels and the ramparts for views towards Gravesend, then pause beside the parade ground or inspect the artillery on display. Dogs on leads are permitted in restricted areas; ask staff which areas are open to them. Reviewers repeatedly enjoy the Thames views and the range of military remains. Bring a picnic if you want a meal, as the shop provides drinks and snacks. Expect cobbles, uneven grass and steps or slopes to some gun positions.

Open Wednesday-Sunday 10am-5pm until 24 October 2026; Wednesday-Sunday 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. Closed from 2 November to 20 December in the current calendar. Check the official calendar for later dates and event exceptions.
Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card; National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary visits; special events may have separate arrangements.
Accessibility: Level access over cobbles, tarmac, gravel and grass reaches the magazines, fort square, exhibition and some underground areas. Ramparts and some guns require steps or steep slopes. The shop has three steps; there is no lift. An accessible toilet is available.
Parking: Free parking in front of the fort, with further parking beside the World's End pub. No marked accessible bays; entrance set-down is permitted.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are admitted only in restricted areas; EH does not identify those areas on this page.
