About
Tilbury Fort defended the Thames approach to London, with the great bastioned fortress commissioned by Charles II after the Dutch raid of 1667. Its surviving moats, outworks and gun positions show how an artillery fort controlled both land and river approaches. The site's history extends from Jacobite prisoners to guns that helped bring down a Zeppelin in 1916, and the Defending the River exhibition explains that long defensive role. Explore the Victorian magazine tunnels and the ramparts for views towards Gravesend, then pause beside the parade ground or inspect the artillery on display. Dogs on leads are permitted in restricted areas; ask staff which areas are open to them. Reviewers repeatedly enjoy the Thames views and the range of military remains. Bring a picnic if you want a meal, as the shop provides drinks and snacks. Expect cobbles, uneven grass and steps or slopes to some gun positions.

Accessibility: Level access over cobbles, tarmac, gravel and grass reaches the magazines, fort square, exhibition and some underground areas. Ramparts and some guns require steps or steep slopes. The shop has three steps; there is no lift. An accessible toilet is available.
