About

Osborne was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's private family retreat on the Isle of Wight, and its rooms and landscape still reveal their tastes and interests. Inside, the state rooms, family apartments and art collections sit alongside a more domestic story of royal life. Beyond the house, the gardens and extensive grounds lead towards Swiss Cottage, where the royal children played, gardened and assembled their own museum, and to Victoria's beach. An interactive tree trail gives families another way to explore the estate. Reviewers often mention the scale of the grounds and the helpful staff, so allow time for walking as well as the house. Visitors with limited mobility should check the available transport and lift arrangements before travelling. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the grounds and formal gardens, but the house, Swiss Cottage, play areas and beach are reserved for assistance dogs.

Use the York Avenue visitor entrance; the directions page recommends PO32 6JT for sat-nav, although the property postal address is PO32 6JX.

Last admission is one hour before closing. In winter Swiss Cottage closes and only the house's ground floor opens; check the calendar for the visitor offer on your date.

A lift serves Queen Victoria's first-floor apartments when available; the nursery is not wheelchair accessible. Mobility scooters are limited to the house's ground floor. Contact the site about mobility transport across the extensive grounds.

English Heritage membership covers standard admission. National Trust membership alone does not cover entry. Special events may be charged separately.
