Newtown Old Town Hall is a small, quirky 17th-century brick building standing in fields on the north coast of the Isle of Wight, the only trace left of a town that was once among the island's most important. As a rotten borough it went on returning two MPs until 1832 with almost nobody left to vote, and the hall was saved for the nation in the 1930s by the anonymous Ferguson's Gang. The hall itself is currently closed for conservation monitoring, but the surrounding National Nature Reserve is the bigger draw: secluded creeks and a natural harbour that rank among the island's best birdwatching sites, flower-filled meadows and ancient woodland with red squirrels. The Estuary Newtown walk runs 3.6 miles from the car park, with a 1.5-mile short option. Dogs are welcome across the reserve on leads, though only assistance dogs may enter the hall. Reviewers praise the friendly volunteers, the explorer packs for children and the views from the bird hides, where recent visitors have watched white-tailed eagles. Tips from visitors: borrow binoculars from the volunteers, and use the postcode and brown signs rather than following sat nav through the creeks.
