Rockcliffe

Rockcliffe is a stretch of the Solway coast in Dumfries and Galloway, rocky bays, shell beaches and wildflower meadows between Rockcliffe and Kippford, where the National Trust for Scotland cares for the shore, the woodland behind it and the Mote of Mark, a hilltop fort of the 6th century whose ramparts still show above the sands. Paths link the two villages along the Jubilee Path and the shore, and at low tide you can walk out to Rough Island, a bird sanctuary closed from May to July while oystercatchers and terns nest. Ancient woodland and meadows inland are rich in butterflies and birds, and the sunsets over the firth draw photographers. Reviewers say the coast path is one of the prettiest in Scotland and warn to watch the tide for Rough Island. Tips from visitors: use the car parks at Rockcliffe beach or Kippford, the Kippford path starts on a steep slope, dogs are welcome under close control, and the village holiday cottages are the Trust's best sellers.
